Planned Giving

You can make a difference!

Planned giving offers a meaningful way to support Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania both during your lifetime and beyond. By thoughtfully integrating charitable giving into your overall financial and estate plans, you help ensure that veterans experiencing homelessness receive the care, stability, and dignity they need today—while also securing the long-term strength of Veterans Grove for generations to come.

The Purpose of Planned Gifts

Whether your support takes the form of a current gift, a future bequest, a beneficiary designation, or another planned giving strategy, your generosity helps sustain 24/7 operations, essential resident services, and the supportive programs that make healing and independence possible. Planned gifts allow you to align your philanthropic goals with your personal and family priorities—making an impact now, preserving flexibility during your lifetime, and creating a legacy that reflects your values and honors the veterans in your life.

Through a balanced approach, your generosity becomes part of a continuum of care—strengthening lives today and ensuring that every veteran who turns to VOPA in the future finds safety, stability, and a true path forward.

Why Planned Giving?

Planned giving provides a thoughtful way to support Veterans Grove both now and in the future. These gifts help sustain the essential resources that allow our community to operate every day—covering utilities, 24/7 staffing, and vital resident services such as case management, transportation assistance, and life-skills programming—while also strengthening the long-term stability of Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania. By incorporating a planned gift into your overall giving strategy, you can make an immediate difference in the lives of veterans today and create a lasting source of support for those who will turn to Veterans Grove in the years ahead, all while preserving flexibility within your current financial plan.

HOW You Give Matters

Most charitable gifts are made with cash, checks, or credit cards. While generous, these methods are often the least tax-efficient. With thoughtful planning, you can support the causes you care about while keeping more after-tax wealth for yourself and your family—both during your lifetime and beyond.

Consider the following strategies:
Donate Appreciated Securities

Before age 70½, one of the most effective strategies is donating appreciated securities such as stocks, ETFs, or mutual funds that you’ve held for more than a year. When you give these assets directly to a public charity or donor-advised fund, the charity can sell them tax-free, and you generally receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value—while completely avoiding capital gains tax. This approach can also help reduce portfolio concentration and future tax exposure.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)

From age 70½ onward, QCDs from IRAs become a powerful tool. A QCD sends funds directly from your IRA to a qualified charity and keeps the distribution out of your adjusted gross income. Lower AGI can reduce taxes on Social Security, help avoid Medicare IRMAA surcharges, and improve overall tax efficiency. Once required minimum distributions begin, QCDs can satisfy them without increasing taxable income.

Bequests

Including VOPA in your will or trust is a simple and flexible way to create a lasting legacy. You can leave a percentage of your estate, a specific amount, or assets such as securities or property. This type of gift costs nothing now and allows you to make a meaningful impact on the veterans served at Veterans Grove in the future.

Beneficiary Designations

Designating VOPA as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy, retirement account, or investment account is one of the easiest ways to create a lasting impact. With just a quick update to your beneficiary form you can ensure that part of what you’ve built in your lifetime helps veterans rebuild theirs. These gifts offer a simple, meaningful way to extend your values and support the future of Veterans Grove.

Charitable Trusts

Charitable trusts provide donors with a versatile planned giving option that supports both personal financial objectives and the long-term sustainability of Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania. These trusts can be structured to provide income to the donor or their heirs, or to provide direct support to VOPA for a defined period before assets transfer to beneficiaries. In addition to creating a meaningful legacy, charitable trusts may offer significant tax advantages and help preserve family resources. By incorporating a charitable trust into your estate planning, you can strengthen the future of Veterans Grove while aligning your philanthropic goals with your broader financial strategy.
